Cross Roads School
The Cross Roads School
A Rosenwald Community School
The Cross Roads School in Brooks County, Georgia was constructed in 1928 and served as a two room school house for African Americans until the early 1960s.
It is one of just and a handful of surviving "Rosenwald" schools that were constructed in the early 20th century across the American South. Julius Rosenwald, then the CEO of Sears and Roebuck, and Booker T. Washington, the President of Tuskegee Institute, collaborated on a program to increase educational opportunities for African American children. The result was the construction of over 5000 schools, workshops and teachers quarters in a variety of standardized designs.
Crossroads was the "two teacher" configuration and though its current condition is battered, a community based team is now committed to its restoration and rebirth.
