Imperial Hotel
The Imperial Hotel
A Green Book Listing
The Imperial Hotel (1949) reflects a time in United States history when African American mobility and independence were on the rise. Across the nation and in Thomasville, members of the Black community were exerting power and agency to challenge the practice of segregation known as Jim Crow. The Imperial Hotel represent the critical foundation of identity and empowerment from which larger Civil Rights changes emerged. The Green Book publications, called "the bible of black travel," were a vital resource for African Americans seeking safe and dignified services on the road.
The Imperial was rescued from demolition and will serve as part of the new home for The Jack Hadley Black History Museum in Thomasville, GA.
A comprehensive historic structure report was commissioned to examine the building and site's historic development, its construction methodology and materials, and to provide the owners with a set of treatment recommendation for adaptive reuse.
